Well the first thing would be to figure out which militia you want to join. Despite the smacktalk, it honestly doesn't matter much since the mechanics both encourage and make it easy for the warzones to semi-frequently flip sides (one side just plexes a whole bunch of systems to vulnerable, and then takes them all and cashes out, other side then does this, etc).
It's Minmatar + Gallente vs Amarr + Caldari, although allied militia is not immediately apparent on your overview (have to manually set them blue). The instance of militia shooting each other is rather rare, excepting the overview mishaps if you're -5.0 security status or lower or pirates donning the FW hat for fun (and corp hoping to stay in it so their -10 faction standings don't matter).
Then I would take a bit and figure out where you want to live. There are some systems in each warzone that are relatively safe from capture, but of course this is not a guarantee. The worst comes to worst though you can always drop FW for a day and move your gear to a new location.
For instance, Kamela/Sahtogas is a pretty safe bet if you're joining the Amarr militia. Arzad/Houla/ Eszur for the minnies since these are where some of the larger alliances base from. Don't know the layout of the gallente/caldari warzone.
Then buy about 400mil or so (can be cheaper if you are broke, ofc) worth of Rifters, Thrashers, Ruptures, and Hurricanes (or whatever kind of ship you want to fly, start cheap) and their fittings/rigs at whatever market hub you desire, and have Black Frog Logistics Jump freighter them to your new home for you.
Find out who the bigwigs in your milita are to gain access to the intel channels, and I would recommend joining one of the already established alliances in order to expedite getting into fleets, unless solo is your game. Orbit buttons for great justice (if you join minny you'll have to go to caldari space because right now there's very few Amarr systems to plex), keep in mind you only get rewarded for offensive plexing (plexes in your enemy's system) and not defensive (plexes in your own system)
As for making money, the most effective way is Level 4 FW missions which greatly affect your faction and corporation standings. As a minmatar you can solo them in a stealth bomber if you're careful and somewhat skilled. Then just wait until your faction gets tier 4 or tier 5 control and then cashout.
Faction warfare is equivalent to a concord wardec, so you're not "safe" even in friendly high sec, although faction navy does spawn it doesn't do much in low highsec (often referred to as "midsec") so hubs like Hek are camped pretty often. |
